Emil's Story

Emil N.R. Chifunda

Born in the UK in 2000 to Tanzanian and Danish parents, London based Emil is an award-winning jeweller and diamond setter, who is redefining fine jewellery through culture, discipline, and craft.

As both a visionary jewellery designer, and a specialist in precision craftsmanship and fine jewellery construction, Emil is dedicated to creating pieces from conception to completion through traditional bench techniques. Emil’s practice is defined by discipline, technical accuracy, and a deep respect for the materials he works with.

Emil’s design philosophy is shaped by a distinctive dialogue between classical European fine art and the vibrant craft traditions of East Africa; an intersection that informs both his aesthetic sensibility and technical approach. It is this unique balance of heritage, artistry, meticulous handcraft and quiet precision, that forms his trademark style.

Award Winning Jeweller

In March 2026, Emil won the prestigious ??? GC & DC award, for his breath taking 'Eros and Aphrodite' engagement ring. The stunning, bespoke creation is a true testament to his work, encompassing both imaginative, modern design, as well as incredible technical skill and eye for detail.

Emil's Jewellery Journey

Emil's jewellery making journey began in Winchester when he found himself making an engagement ring for a friend. As a 17 year-old complete novice, he knew that he would need to seek expert guidance to be able to complete the piece.  Emil approached a brilliant French jeweller called Marion Lebouteiller, who had a small workshop and a great eye for design.

Marion took Emil under her wing and helped him to create his first ever piece. After that she took him on as a part time apprentice, which started the process of conditioning his hands to the work. By the time his apprenticeship with Marion came to an end Emil was hooked and knew that he wanted to pursue the craft, wherever it took him.

A few weeks later, Emil landed in the workshop of expert goldsmith, Thomas Wellburn. A highly skilled craftsman who cut his teeth before the introduction of 3D printing, Thomas helped Emil to hone his metal working skills, as well as giving him a valuable insight into the jewellery trade.

It was around this time that Emil started his diploma at the British Academy of Jewellery (BAJ), where he trained under the talented Bekkie Ora. Knowledgeable on so many different aspects of jewellery making, Bekkie sparked Emil’s curiosity into the vast array of techniques of the trade, and he was hungry to learn more.

After completing his Level 3 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacture & Design at the BAJ, Emil went looking for work and found himself at the Budrevich Jewellery Studio in London’s world-famous jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden. It was here, under his talented mentor Arseniy Budrevich, that he perfected the art of diamond setting.

After 7 years in Hatton Garden, Emil decided it was time to branch out on his own, and the house of Atlas Almaz was born.
